The general rule of thumb is to flush your brake fluid every 40,000 to 60,000 kilometres, which typically works out to around every 2 to 3 years. If you drive more frequently, though, it might need to be flushed on the lower end of that range, as it takes more wear and tear the more you use it. The short answer is yes, your Mazda can run with degraded brake fluid. However, the risk of your brakes malfunctioning or even failing increases the dirtier your brake fluid becomes, which happens through years of usage. Dirty or dark brake fluid should be checked and flushed to keep your Mazda’s brakes properly functioning.

When your brake pads wear down, the master cylinder has to give more brake fluid to the calipers so that they can press the brake pads into the rotors hard enough to still get them to stop turning, which leaves the fluid in the pistons on the calipers. This will set off your ABS/brake system warning light on your digital gauge, as the brake fluid level is measured by the amount in the master cylinder. However, the hose and brake lines can become damaged through use and in accidents as well, which leads to the brake fluid leaking out.
